Re: Are the New Yorkers Bound to go Up in Value?

Well they are popular now. But about 6 months ago he had trouble selling them. The reason they are popular is because they is nothing else as nice out there if this remains true then yes they will go up a bit or remain the same in value. However if Paulson or someone else comes out with a nice custom chip with a similar feel then I don't think these will be as in demand. It is always nicer to have a custom set with your logo so no one can slip in a chip at a game. I feel this is only a matter of time look at all the new chips coming out lately.

Also I think chips are hot right now especially the 25-50-100 this is because of the Texas holdem fad. In a couple of years who knows what the game will be and what denominations will be or even if poker will be as popular.

Re: Are the New Yorkers Bound to go Up in Value?

You bring up some interesting points, but some are slightly off IMO.

He had some trouble selling them because he was wanting $2 per chip for any and all denominations, but now it is around $1.25 a chip.

* Custom chips are fine, but they are not secure either. (see below)

* Custom chips will not be of the same quality as a casino grade Paulson chip.

* There is no $50 chip New Yorker Chip.

* Texas holdem is not a fad. It has been popular for over 30 years & it is now been experienced by the masses outside of places like Vegas.

* The denominations will never really change. Has the U.S. Currency we use changed? We still use $1, $5, $10, $20 & $100 bills and will most likely use these denominations until we are long gone.

The reason why the New Yorkers set will not really die out is because everyone out there can pretty much make the set they want. With the crystal parks and the vineyards they are out of most people reach (especially the higher denoms like the $500 & $1,000) these casino grade Paulsons are not that common. The only chips I know of that are out there like the New Yorkers are the crystal parks, vineyards and to a lesser extent the dunes. The dunes are out there, but they are out of reach for almost everybody as far as price goes and they do not even have any real quantities over the $100 denominations. Casino grade Paulsons do not just come around every day especially in these quantities and in uncalculated condition. The New Yorkers are the exception, not the rule. I do not believe you will find many more deals like the New Yorkers to come along for a while if ever.

To elaborate on your custom chip argument:
Usually when you get a custom chip made for your personal game, it is only a custom inlay on a few pre-selected edge spot combinations. This means that anyone else can get a custom chip with a different inlay in the middle of the same edge spot combinations. Unless you personally go through every chip to make sure that all of the chips in the middle of the racks have only your inlay on them, you may have some counterfeits in your rack and not know if until later.

As far as "will poker even be as popular" statement:
You may be somewhat correct, but I think that everything has a limit to how hot it can be. Poker may not be as commercially viable in the future and there may not be as many shows with poker on them (most are pretty cheesy trying to quickly take advantage of the new thing, see celebrity poker etc...), but I think poker will now be a staple of American entertainment not a “remember when we used to play poker” thing. I put this in the ESPN / MTV category and not the Macarena / Vanilla Ice category. I do not think people are going to laugh at you 10 years from now because you played poker back in the day.

The key reason why I think poker will never go away is that men and women both enjoy the game as a casual form of entertainment. One main point is that most people enjoy a little gambling and a chance to win some coin and have bragging rights for the next week. This never goes of style. This is not like chess where the better player can just destroy the newer player. The element of luck allows for a more level playing field. This way more people can enjoy it instead of it only being that people with a tremendous amount of hours played being the only ones that can win on any given day.

The WPT made poker popular back in early 2003 with the pocket cam showing viewers for the first time ever what the pros were doing while in a hand. This made people really understand how the game was played by the best players in the world and that they were not really doing anything that magical that we all can't do to a certain level. I remember when MTV first came on the air and someone said to me that MTV was a fad as well. I think they are still on the air. It has been 3 years since poker burst on the scene and it still has shown some pretty good legs. I used to watch poker on TV all the time, now I only watch the WSOP main event. I personally have had my fill of poker on TV, but I still play all the time. While I do believe that we may be seeing the peek of it as far as T.V. shows and airtime, I think once you enjoy the game you will not just quit playing it.

I hope this helps with some of your points you brought up.
